the original story is gone - it was about a call reguarding a DUI leaving the cassino , and shots reportably fired and the deputy being dispatched to investigate and a reported shooting , it developed that the deputy was shot and a standoff was in progress with the nearby school locked down .....................................................................

Standoff ends in Mahnomen; deputy in critical condition
The Associated Press • February 18, 2009
MAHNOMEN — A Mahnomen County sheriff’s deputy was in critical condition Wednesday after being shot several times in an incident that sparked a nine-hour standoff with police and locked down an area in this northwestern Minnesota town.

The standoff ended peacefully about 4 p.m. when the second of two suspects walked out of a mobile home and surrendered to authorities. Another person had been taken into custody earlier in the day, said Dave Bjerga, assistant superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Dewey remained in critical, but stable condition at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D., Wednesday evening. The 26-year-old had two surgeries — after being shot in the abdomen and the head.

MeritCare officials said in a statement that the head wound resulted in a severe brain injury, and it was too soon to know a prognosis. Hospital officials said doctors were able to repair a laceration to Dewey’s liver.

Sheriff Doug Krier told reporters the incident started around 4 a.m. when authorities got a call about a drunken driver leaving the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen. Deputies found the vehicle near the courthouse with no one in it.

About 6:20 a.m., the sheriff said, neighbors reported shots were fired in that general area.

“The deputies responded and checked the area but couldn’t find anything,” Krier said. He said that about 7:10 a.m., Dewey went to a house to interview a witness about the gunfire.

“At about 7:11 his backup called to find out his status and how he was doing. He did not answer his radio,” Krier said.

2 charged in shooting of Mahnomen deputy
The Associated Press • February 20, 2009
MAHNOMEN — Two Twin Cities-area men were charged today in connection with a shooting that left a Mahnomen County sheriff’s deputy critically wounded.

Thomas Lee Fairbanks, 32, was charged with first-degree attempted murder and other counts in the shooting of Deputy Christopher Dewey, 26. His bail was set at $1 million.

Daniel Kurt Venier, 27, was charged with lesser counts. His bail was set at $500,000. Venier allegedly told police that he was not the one to shoot Dewey.

Dewey was shot in the head and the abdomen Wednesday morning while checking a report of shots fired in a neighborhood in Mahnomen. A backup deputy found Dewey lying in the driveway.

The shooting led to a nine-hour standoff at a mobile home that ended when the suspects surrendered peacefully.

Doctors treating Dewey said Thursday he was recovering faster than expected but the extent of his brain injuries were not yet known. He was listed in critical but stable condition today at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Dewey’s family members posted on the CaringBridge Web site this morning that he had been responsive and at one point flashed a thumb’s-up.

About 50 uniformed law enforcement officers and a dozen of Dewey’s family members attended the hearing this morning.
