well, after 2 trips to kentucky this week~ i have my walnut blanks in the ruff...
I went last saturday and picked up mom, drove her back her to visit with us till thursday, then took her back, loaded the walnut log i had cut on her place (a ice storm downed tree) and then got back here saturday morning...had my amish friend cut it into 3" thick slabs. now to place them somewhere to dry for 5 years!
1200 miles ~18hrs driving~ makes me wanna stay home for a while!

maybe i'll watch a little sport tv~~~~~~~~

....Hey 'tuck.......didnt der Germans make some form of kilns to dry-or cure- their walnut stocks out quicker...???....mebbe you can rig something for some of the slabs as a test???...I think they had to put some kinda weight on them to minimize warping too...???... just a thought

Kiln dried wood is never as good as the same wood naturally seasoned.
Three years is a minimum for natural seasoning of Walnut, five is better, and some stockmakers prefer 8-10 years.

I have some slabs of Walnut for pistol grips that have seasoned for twenty years. About time I made a couple of pairs of grip panels.

I have a couple of pieces laid aside intended for Enfield fore ends, seasoned for over 15 yrs. More I look at these the less I want to start on them, they are solid as rock.

i have a couple slabs of maple in my garage since my dad passed away in 2000 - maybe that might work for an interesting looking stock ?
