Did I say I want one????
Just as I was leaving, this guy plops down next to me and I do a quick glance over. I think I see a 742 Remington. Then he unloads cast lead bullets in .45 caliber. Still not paying close attention, I assumed it was one of those in-line rifles. The range officer whispers to me, it's a new .45 caliber air rifle capable of shooting that 180 grain 45 pill at 850 fps. What!! Out comes an air tank, and he fills the port in the rifle from this air tank. It lets him have 8 shots before needing a refill. Golly, the rifle looks like the Rem 742 semi auto. You slide a port open, push the bullet in,close port, and cock the lever on the right side, which looks like the slide handle. He was just sighting in his new 3x9 scope. He was shooting at 50 yards and was impacting inside one of those 6" shoot and see targets. I should have stayed for a closer inspection, especially to see how it grouped...Now, for the good parts...he says he has one in .22 caliber that shoots 1250 fps and has comperable if not better accuracy than most .22 lr rifles. It is NOT considered a firearm, it uses air! (Just wait till the legislators here that.) No Federal restrictions!.(England considers any air gun with 5 ft lbs of energy to be a gun.) A .45 at 850 fps is equal almost to a .45ACP!. This guy said the rifle was $550, but the air holding tank, which is dragged nearby could be quite heavy. He bought the best; a fiber tank and he hinted it cost more than the rifle. He can use it though on his other guns. Know what he says he has on order? A .87 caliber rifle that shoots a 900 grain slug. I should have asked the velocity on that one. The sound of the .45 airgun was about twice as loud as my .22 pellet gun. You could hear the bullet slap the cardboard. Now he did say he came to the range with a low tank, so velocitys may have been slower. He fills the big tank at a dive shop, and fills the gun with a thin hose that snaps quick-connect to a port on the rifle. I am gonna research them and see if they make them in the 30 calibers. The gun is made in China and was of firearm quality.
