These were a common sight at discount stores during the mid sixties.
They were sold already cut down, though many home brewed sporters look much the same.
The basic rifle is the 1893 usually the Spanish 1916 in 7mm, though some South African 7mm 93 and 95 short rifles probably also got the treatment.
Near as I can tell the Short rifle version of these early mausers was a compromise between the full lenght infantry model and the very short carbine first used by South African Levies of the German forces in Africa and called a "Bush Rifle".
The style was picked up by several other countries such as the Swedish M38 short rifle and the afore mentioned Spanish 1916.
Some rifles were made this way at the factory , with Carbine style bolt handles,and others were cut down and bolt handles bent, often from rifles that had suffered bore damage nearest the muzzle from steel cleaning rods of the time.
Sights can vary among rifles of the same type, some new for the gun, others older long rifle sights sometimes with elevations remarked.
The rifle shown appears to be a 93 action. My 95 action had a hump behind the bolt handle which acted as a safety lug, the 93 doesn't have this.
95 actions were occasionally mixed in with 93 actions. Spain bought up rifles from all over during its Civil War and even relined WW1 8mm GEW98 rifles to 7mm.

Last time I went to buy a 1916 Short Rifle they only had one left and its metal under the wood was badly rusted away. Too bad, don't see them anymore, very handy rifles.
