If you come back on and your login does not work retry with your username without the 7.

bought it back several months ago at a little gun show at one of the National Guard armories. was already converted to .300 Savage. Stock was in bad shape but cleaned up well. had no sights or scope mounts. i cut and recrowned barrel to 21". Put some Williams front and rear sights on. Metal is not finished, gonna DuraCoat it or use my old standby AlumaHyde II. Finish on it now is Krylon, seeing if I liked the flat black color with the stock. I think it has good contrast. Recoil pad is a Kick-eez Sorbothane that is great. it fit the stock well with little trim work. let me know what u think?

It looks good. Was it rebarreled and have you shot it yet?

it has not been rebarreled. it's holding .5 MOA at 25 yards with Fed 180 gr factory loads. my gunsmith friend says I can work up and shoot .308 pressure loads in it but i'll probably stay on the upper end of the .300 savage data or what ever shoots the best.

Wonder how it would hold at distance. Also see if you can get some .311 diameter pills. Will tighten things up even more.

Looks damn fine to me. Like the tiger action in the stock

The Arisaka has such a great reputation for strength its a wonder that no commercial sporting rifles were built using the original action type.
Of course during its heyday there were millions of Mausers and M1917 Enfields available for those inclined towards the bolt action centerfires. After WW2 there were truck loads of jap rifles that were chambered for the hard to find original 7.7 and 6.5 cartridges, and it was a popular rifle action for custom rifles.
But it must have been more a case of politics and restrictions on arms production in post war Japan than anything else.

Apparently at least some of the pre WW1 and pre WW2 bolt actions , like the Murata, were sold in South America as sporting rifles or converted to smaller gauge shot shells. There was a large Japanese civilian presence in some South American countries, and probably still is.

The example shown here is a nice looking Deer and even Moose or Bear gun. Its heavy bullet loads should have plenty of put down energy and penetration.
The .300 Savage is a cartridge I'd considered for an Enfield action I have gathering dust.

The conversion looks to have been very nicely and professionally done, probably set back and rethreaded before the chamber was cleaned up.
The wood turned out real nice.

I remember when this was the going thing. The barrel was set back one thread and a 300 reamer lightly run. Another popular conversion was use a 30-06 reamer and shoot 150 gr. bullets - making the OL right for the magazine box. A gun shop - TP Gun Shop in one of the northern states would do this for $6.

Very nice looking rifle......
