Is that how it is done? by hand?

I have an old Zulu that I bought with a big chunk broken out of the side of the stock right by the breech. I've planed it down past the break and glued on a piece of cherry. My plan was to use a router to cut the barrel groove. Should I really do this by hand? (I have flat chisels and some rounded lathe tools. No dedicated round hand chisels.)

Something like this works if you don't feel like wrapping sandpaper around a piece of PVC pipe. SW

for those of us not well versed in the vintage rifles please explain the term "swamped" .....i know what comes to mind but figure im off mark

Swamped is tapered with a flair at the muzzle. Usually Octagonal
