I am still working the corners and stuff down on this 'squrrile rifle'....cherry stocked, it takes more abuse than i thought....I tend to bang it into stuff while handleing her...and T-H-I-N!!!....this thing won't even cast a shadow~ but it's the way it'll turn out due to lock/barrel size etc.........

Ignorant question time... what did the old timers treat their stock with? I can't believe they went out in the elements with bare wood. In that economic era, there most likely wasn't linseed oil, boiled or other wise.... folks was too busy trying to grow enough corn & such to keep the kids fed through the winter...

So I got to thinking what WAS available to keep the stocks from soaking up water...

Melted deer tallow? ( my A guess) - coal oil? kinda expensive for folks who lived on barter most of the time - whale oil? widely available but possibly expensive - the stuff they used for axle grease? beef or piggy tallow?

So an old timer finished his flint grinder rifle he could trade for a wagon or team or whatever else he might need... what did he put on the stock? SW

I have been doing some re-search....found out that sweat from a Spears family member has enuff greasefat to perserve ANYthing....so down thru the ages, the Spears family were sought after for many things...one being fat laced sweat from be-tween the folds of skin~ some say 'smegma' some say other things.....

I got my book of 'known facts' from a Alabama library, in the double wide trailer at the end of the street, where all those junk cars are parked up in the grass, by the tied coon dogs~~~ :Dbounce:
