From the Library of Congress:

Looks like an early version "trade" cap rifle in the fore-ground.

Curtis did the bulk of his work in the late 1890's~early 1900's.
He draws undeserved criticism for asking his subjects to "dress-up", which was actually the norm back then for formal portrait work. We do get some idea of social structures from his photos.

I need to dig into this some more. The bulk of his work was published in a limited edition set of 20 volumes. This edition saw only 500 sets printed...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts it was taken in the Dakotas somewhere.
Looks like Sioux formal dress...

Which is why I need to delve into this further, and possibly find a reprint set.
No location given as it was lifted off another site lacking that info.
I believe the set title was Indians of North America...

Doc Sharptail

Been a while since I posted a link. It seems to work from here on M/S Edge.

I was right about the photo being Sioux...
There may be hope for me yet. Looks like it was re-published up to at least a 3rd edition.

Interesting site!

Doc Sharptail

Here's some Sioux again in 1904. Photo is credited to Curtis.

This guy was named Wolf Robe- almost certainly Curtis' work again.
I think that is the biggest T-Pipe I've ever seen. Pieces of pipe stone that size being workable are a scarce item.

IIRC, this chief was a member of the crow tribe.

there is a place in the south west corner of Minnesota where they mined and made these - pipetsone down by worthington near the iowa/south dakota boarders

Dodge City, Kansas, 1872.
Not sure if this is Curtis or not. High possibility of it being his work...
