A little back story... The rat is one of many that were trained in Belgium to find mines in Cambodia. It's a successful project.

Camera pigeons were tried in WW1, but as well you can imagine results were poor at best.

The people with bayonets in their mouth are part of a post WW1 protest in France relating to poor veteran benefits. SW

The photo pigeons is actually sort of interesting.
The cameras look very scaled down.
I doubt they'd be able to fly with a full frame 120 folder- those would out-weigh the pigeons by a considerable amount.
The one at extreme r/h looks like a scaled down plate camera, which probably had the highest chance of working out of all shown.
I guess the real fly in the ointment would be where and how to trip the shutters, if and when the birds achieved flight...

Another pic in the Russian article showed a handler winding a camera with a key. Maybe a mechanism tripped the shutter at intervals? There were two images supposedly taken by pigeons... Hard to identify what was in them.

Hungry falcons didn't help the program, either. SW

That pike noodling pic says it all.

There was something with sis being bitten by a pike.
The big toe was opened badly enough for a couple of stitches.
I was bit a couple of times by smaller pike, but no big deal- just deep tooth marks on my feet.

Personally, for pike noodling, I'd want heavy steel mesh gloves, and at least water crocs to protect my feet.

Ice noodling for pike I'll leave to those that can do it.
Looks too cold for me.

i was thinking that as well , you only get bitten once to not forget ,

i had been catching and releasing bass all morning oonce and noticed some kids get attracted by the activity , a young one asked if he could have the next one [he said his family needed dinner] so i hooked a nice pike and tossed it on the bank never thought he didnt know you dont grab them by the jaw , learned a hard lesson that day ,
