i consider it US manufactured but its a british rifle design made specifically under british contract [just a bit fouled up in legalities of the lend-lease rouse]
if we had modified it and used it id feel differently i suppose, but we didnt

i also consider the Pattern 1914 american manufactured but a british designed rifle made specifically under british contract,
and/but the US model 1917 is US manufactured US contract rifle, simply modified from a current production british design,
i realize its a technicality, and it could be considered a british rifle that we simply contracted for just as easily,
i do look at these as two different rifles BTW even tho they are so similar

i dont know how i might have felt if the british had continued with their interest in the M1903 and simply modified that,
luckily they just used some aspects of it in the development of the P1913/P1914, along with the aspects of their SMLE they prefered

thanks gery , i had thought a lot about these a few years ago when i owned two savage no4s , i sold/traded both because of that thought process , ive not yet regreted that , and i may very well buy another - but ill styill call it a british rifle made in the US

same with the P1914 its a british rifle made in the US , but i suspect ill always see the M1917 as a british design-US rifle , made in the US ,

the big factor here was the move from government arsenal production to commercial corporation production of government designs under contract , it began with the P14 [in this limited scope of discussions] in WWI and evolved to the savage no4s , remington M1903 , and remington & smith corona M1903A3s , and M1 rifles by winchester in WWII [not widening the discussions to M1carbines ] its a fascinating aspect of war production , and one of the interesting topics in this hobby ,

its also why i limit my area of interest , you could get totaly overwhelmed if you collected everthing [er , at least i could ]

as a postscript to this --- an equaly interesting piece of my collection is the canadian inglis hipower , i consider this a canadian pistol -

they were licensed to produce this by FN and while they copied it for the most part , it does have some design revisions , but thats not why i consider it canadian , i see it as that because they were the sole producers of these and they controled the dispersal of it , and they continued its service use with their forces from then .....er ...till now ,


i look at the FN highpowers as a diferent animal altogether for collecting purposes , some may difer , thats how i see it

majority of the US rifles were mixmasters once into the hands of troops , one requirement of the government contracts was interchangeability , to them parts-is-parts , unlike collectors they could care less who made the parts or how they left the factory , mostly concerned that all parts were servicable and sometimes that the rifle was brought up to current standards as those changed
