i think in our circle there is no seach thing as an oblolete firearm.. i know that i have some old guns but as i shoot them i dont consider them to be obsolete. is my swiss vetterli that i reload for and shoot obsolete? how about my 11 mauser or my 11 mm spanish remington rolling block. on other forums that might be a correct term but here no way. one time many years when i was dumb and young i turned down a french grass with good bore and i would say very good plus condition. turned down because i found out what reloading dies brass etc cost. i have kicked myself for years. by the way i could have bought it for the princley sum of 75 bucks.. if i had it i would shoot it and the hell with the cost of componets. i bought a steyr model 95 before lee offered dies so i spent 200 dollars getting set up to reload for it. mould from down under dies from the g list at rcbs custom gh&i die. yep color me stupid spending 200 bucks to reload for a gun i paid $79.00. i dont have any oblosete firearms if any of you do i would like to know what it is and maybe i will buy it so i can get set up to shoot and reload for it. joe gifford aka argie1891

There are antique but I don't know of any obsolete unless being referred to by the military.

In my take 'Obsolete' would be one that commercial ammo isn't available any more.
Obsolete to your average 'Joe'.

Not to us resourceful types though

An obsolete fire arm is
1. A gun where the barrel is competely filled with concrete.
2. A gun which no longer has a firing lock or cannot be fired with any kind of jerry-rigged fuse or firing mechanism.
3. A gun with the barrel bent at an acute 90 degrees (not including a Krummlauf) unless you want to get your mother-in-law to fire it. :crzy: :crzy: :crzy:

I would say an obsolete firearm is one you can not readily get ammo for. Yes your guns would be obsolete to me. You may be able to reload a cartridge, and that would not make it obsolete. If you have to alter the firearm to make it work, then the original is obsolete. There were some .52 rimfire Sharp cartridges. That is obsolete, so are pin fires. The Nambu (8mm) is near obsolete, but recently a maker made a run of ammo for it, or so I hear.

what i was getting at was that to us almost no firearm is obsolete as we will find a way to make it shoot again. i would be willing to bet that most on this forum have brought a fine old firearm back to life. to the armchair shooters most of what we here do it shoot obsolete firearms. to us hell just give me a chance to buy another obsolete firearm and i will find a way to shoot it if at all possible. joe gifford

"Obsolete" is a loaded word for sure. I hunt exclusively with flintlocks and consider them obsolete but only as a term of reference. They are as efficient as modern guns, however. I have modern rifles in .250/3000, .22 Hornet and .350 Rem; some people call these calibers obsolete though they are some of the best ever designed. It's completely subjective IMHO.

I do have one that is chambred for 56/50 rimfire. It is temporarily obsolete. There are CF breechblocks available but then again with a rifle that is a civil war veteran, why push it.

BTW Hanshi, like yer sig line! :D

Obsolete, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
