Greetings and Salutations!
If any of you Werndl owners plan on breaking your rifle down for a complete cleaning and inspection, be careful with the breechblock. The axis/shaft that the breech block rotates on has a square segment that fits very tightly into the hole. I soaked the 140 years worth of crud with Kroil (my 1st use of Kroil!) and attempted to rotate the shaft back and forth to break it loose. After removing the screw that retains the firing pin and axis/shaft, I thought the rest would be a piece o' cake. No dice. Finally, I held the shaft in my protected vise jaws and used an oak rod and a mallet to TAP the breech block off the shaft. It came right off with just a few taps. Whew! Cheers!

Good work! Some of the old guns can be fun to get apart! Now that you've made it through that, you need a yak fat Nepal project! ;) :rotflma:

Just the thing to keep your mind occupied until it's wam enough to get the Enfield out! :lol SW

Indeed! I have been out for a few short toodles around town, but I must be getting touchy in my old age! The windchill effect really puts a hurting on my hands. As for projects, I am awaiting the arrival of a Ross Model 1905 R Sporter. If the photos were authentic, it is a very well maintained and unabused rifle. I thought it would be nice to have a gun that needed only a good cleaning and a coat of wax, rather than a complete overhaul! Cheers!

I don't remember mine being such a chore. Maybe mine had been cleaned more recently.

All of my milsurp rifles, with the exception of the Beaumont-Vitali, were priced for me, due to their lack of originality and being Bubba'd to one extent or another. Some folks would call them wall hangers or parts guns. I do what I can to get them back out on the range looking as pretty, and safe, as possible. The Werndl was unbelievably filthy. The bore cleaned up well with nice sharp rifling and a small patch of scale. It should shoot well. I just sent the firing pin off to get welded back together. This gun will take a bit longer than the others! The wood is intact, surprisingly, considering how thin it gets under the action. The heavy trigger plate must play a big part in preventing the stock from breaking in two. Cheers!

Mine is a Carbine that had been converted for the full rifle calibre. Bore isn't so pretty but it shoots OK. I have a thread somewhere around here on fireforming 348 win brass for it.

Here is my Werndl 'sporter'. The stock was one step above garbage, but was salvageable and did not require much Acra Glas.

One more......
The muzzle was really beat up and the front sight was busted off. I bought the ramp from NECG and it turned out okay. The ramp is much higher, so I have been playing around with rear sight elevation to compensate. She really is a tack driver. I wish I had some 'before' photos to show what a wreck it was. The metal was caked with rust and left pitting on the barrel. It is a wonder the bore survived virtually unscathed.

Looking good!! I've seen some old rifles that qualified for "epoxy stock containing particles of original wood". SW
