My friend has a 1899 Remington Lee sporting rifle that appears to be a high grade version with a half octagon barrel at 28” and its in the 50000 SN range. All the info I could find online said the sporting rifles were in the 70000 range, the other problem is the caliber, the barrrel is stamped 40.60 and I can’t find any reference to that caliber for the rifle.it all looks legit and original but info is scarce. Any help would be great.

You could give these guys a try. Other than that, I'm pretty much clueless about Remingtons. SW

I am not a Remington expert. The following information is from Wikipedia:



Supposedly Lee updated the 1879 design to use smokeless cartridges by adding front locking lugs to the bolt. I cannot tell since the end of the bolt is not visible in the pics. The rifle pictured in the link is not to be confused with the 1895 6mm Lee navy which was a straight pull. The rifle pictured is a turn bolt rifle similar to the British military Enfields. I put this excess information in so that uninformed readers would not confuse the two.

The cartridge may be a 40-60 Winchester. The parent cartridge was the 45-70.

Bullet weight:210 grain lead. Bullet diameter 0.405"

Velocity 1960 feet per second

As to whether it exists in a smokeless loading ??? There are people who reload it. The chamber would have to be checked to make sure this is the correct cartridge.

It is in unusually good condition for a rifle that old. I have rifles that are 20 years old that don't look that good? Hmmm.

Tried to register and get on that Remington board. No go, never got an approval.
