About 10 or 12 years ago I bought two Marlin store brand 22s since I was hoping to get one of every variety and the price was right at a local gun show = very cheep. In the end that was too big a project & I gave it up. So I put the 2 rifles in with my junker parts rifle pile in a basement storage space.

Fast forward to last week when I was after a certain part & there they were. This Westpoint (store brand of Cotter & Co hardware chain) is actually in excellent condition. Took it out for a function test & ripped a couple mags through it w/o issue.

I had a Weaver K3 on another rifle & pulled it for use here. Scored a set of $7 rings at wally & I'm in biz now! I have one of the Tasco "shot saver" bore sighters & now it's time to go shoot chin whiskers off Amish grasshoppers! ;)

And for Doc... what distinguishes a K3-F from a standard K3? SW

thats a fun one - im not adverse to your original quest just never thought to try that but in looking the possibilities are overwhelming since these 'store brands' were very prolific , i would not know where to start a project like that - a single store ? a single brand ? its still overwhelming - things were so much different pre 68 , life was good - we were still free americans , this is all BS with the attempts to restrict our 2A

they are now going after the 1A as well if you read of our candidate for lt gov that wrote amazon a letter that should sink him [save for the far left socialists among us] there was a time when they were in the closet - we need to put them back there or deport them ,

I was just going for store brands made by Marlin, but there were so many - some with very limited production and some sold only in Canada there was just no way to get them all. The other in the storage space was Ranger = early Sears store brand model 34. A single shot, cock on close 22. Very robust and nice walnut stock. Haven't tried for accuracy with it yet. SW

Hi Hogger!

Could you post a pic of the turrets with the caps off? I got a sneakin suspicion here...

Just got in a K-12 with a C-3-1 suffix, and no El-Paso roll stamp.
To briefly summarize, Weaver shared a trait with Marlin... nothing was ever thrown away or scrapped or recycled. It was all and always saleable goods....

I'll know more with a look at the turrets.

That is a way cool stock! I likes it! I got a set of Weaver 1" rimfire rings around here somewhere. Just hafta find them. I'd kinda like to locate them before the next 60-B K-3 gets here :-? That bbl band was at one time a sought after item....

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

All righty then! Here's pics of the scope turrets. Caps are magnetic.

I mentioned I found two rifles back in the storage space. Here's the other - a Ranger model 34 by Marlin. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Oh - and while putting bullets back on the shelf last night, I noticed what looks very much like another 22 rifle behind a pile of Carcano parts guns. More on that when I have time to look at it. SW

That's what I thought they would be.
More on this later when I can get my hands on Stroebel.
Almost definitely a post '78 scope.
Magnetic caps are a new one on me....

Doc Sharptail

Another nice stock. Is it adult sized? Thought it was a self cocker at first. The T-handle on it is nice.

It seems to be intended for adults - fits me fairly well. Cock on close for that one. Nice walnut stock, too. SW

Maybe I have too much junk? Nah! That can't be it! ;)

When I was working, I'd buy stuff like store brand 22s for low $ and set them aside to be played with later. The big problem was railroading doesn't have days off & I'd get tired & flat forget about stuff like these 22s when I had a free moment a few months later.

It's kinda fun to discover things. I have time now and can go play with them. Burned up half a brick with the Westpoint murdering pine cones already. SW

For some reason I had been thinking the El-Paso roll stamp had been dropped in '78. It may have been earlier than that.
I don't have much to go on here. Stroebel is silent on production codes and dates.
What I do know for sure is that the micro-track turret system was introduced in the new T series scopes in '78. The following year saw this turret system used across the entire scope line...

Your scope looks almost like a Micro-track turret frame with the older finger adjustable turrets. The micro track required a coin (ideally a U.S. nickel) to make adjustments with. Could well be what it was~ using up the old style turrets on hand to keep costs down.

I haven't had much time to go through scopes. Work's been a hectic frantic pace lately. Will try and make time tomorrow night to get a few turret and roll stamp pix up. Incidentally, I'll have to go to the P/O Wed afternoon and pick up that new to me K-3 60B with the post reticle...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

A search on boink turned up that "F" was likely the last suffix letter code of that system. Still not a lot to go on- no date codes...

I wonder why the El-Paso mark was dropped. Nothing wrong with the USA roll mark~ but still not the almost romantic charm of El-Paso.

Doc Sharptail

K-3 got here o.k.

Gonna get a lil pic heavy here...

Image

Not a lot different from hogger's sample.

El-Paso/Patent rollstamp.
Image

Turrets are twins. Caps ain't magnetic though. Feels like there's a tensioner in there to prevent a loose cap from escaping under recoil.

Image

Here's what make's her special:

Image

Not sure what number reticle this is. It sure as heck ain't a #4, which I'll get up in the next few days for any interested inclinations...

Here's what I think is an early micro track turret on my k-4-1:

Image

Got more camera work to do, too, for more roll stamp marks...

Doc Sharptail

I was going to say German #4 but I don't think so now. Maybe Weaver's in house post & crosshair? I get along with those but greatly prefer a very fine conventional crosshair.

And I should have said steel scope caps rather than 'magnetic'. SW

Got the scope fine tuned at the range today & was getting one hole groups @ 25 yards which = minute of prairie dog! I rally like the fine crosshairs on the K-3F! SW

I like the tapered post & crosshair but wouldn't pay more for one. My closest friend used to call the other 'fencepost' & crosshair. Which is largely how I look at it, too. SW

B.I.L. stopped by today with an armload....

... of moose meat, walleye, ducks and I don't know what else. For me, there's most of a 100 ct box of Super X 40 gr RN in the old red plastic box. These I like! Came close to maxxing the bdt with them so long ago. They are tight enough to get back into the head-shots hunting mode. All B.I.L.'s should be like this!
