Like most, I appreciate plenty different types of music, but what's stuck with me the most in recent years is stuff played on the acoustic guitar. Heard guys like Leo Kottke, Doc Watson and John Prine years ago, and was hooked. Tony Rice IMO was in a league of his own.

.. and of course, can't leave out Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith .. :D

"Once were Brothers" is back into rotation on cable.
Semi-historical take on The Band with major input from Robbie Robertson for those not in the know.

Got "The Weight" stuck in my head again...

Sara Vaughn and Ella are big on F/B right now.

Still have to find a copy of Steve Forbert's "Jack Rabbit Slim" on CD.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Always liked this Robbie Robertson tune .. his delivery of the line 'why do you always end up down at Nick's Cafe' never fails to get a grin outta me. Old kinda cheesy video by now, but the tune is nice... 'Somewhere Down the Crazy River'...

I never get tired of hearing this tune ... IMO, one of the best ever written ... John Hartford wrote it, and Glen Campbell made it famous :D

Yep, guessing the video was probably from around 20 yrs ago when even Willie still looked kinda young ...

Here's another one ... hard to believe that just one guitar plus only three voices can sound so damned good...

Which sort of brings to mind covers.

Hoyt Axton's "Never Been To Spain" has certainly been done to death by everyone~ heck, even Waylon got in on this act.
Still like the Three Dog Night version the best.
Elvis did a more than passable version during the worst of his upper-downer-inner-outer daze (I'm thinkin Live at Madison Square here)...

There's other notable covers.
Some are obscure, Eg. Suzy Boguss singing Take It To The Limit.
Others are more widely known like the Grand Funk Railroad's cover of the Locomotion...

One of the more notable cover artists is Stevie Ray Vaughn.
His version of Tin Pan Alley is actually scarier than the original.
He does fine justice to Hendrix's Little Wing, btw.

There's a lot to mine here when I actually sit down and think about it...

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

recently ive had one of those earwigs ............country joe and the fish - fixin to die rag , cant seem to shake it , i like their woodstock version best but i get it that most sources censor - that one left me for a bit but never really left me because it was the time when some of us were living it - one way or another , not a great tune - just an impressionable time of life , i know a few here know what im talking about , some were there - some were here , life was forever changed

Stupid times for sure .. made sure to walk through campus on drill day with the army uniform on to take a wide circle around the protest crowds on the open grassy areas. Man, those agitators pissed me off. Best thing to do was to walk far around from where they set up shop. Other than the occasional heckler, hardly an issue. Somebody stuck his foot out and tripped a heckler on the parade ground one day, but that was the worst confrontation I saw .. the heckler landed on the ground with a mighty surprised look on his face lol. I'll never forgive those pieces of commielover sh*t for what they perpetrated when they invaded our campus.

Leo Kottke is truly an original, and a funny storyteller in concert .. this album is what got me to try to learn guitar back in the early '70's. One or two other tunes on this album were easier to figure out, but this one, I don't think I ever will...

This tune by Doc Watson is another one that got me to try to learn fingerstyle guitar .. such a great sound. Pretty amazing that he's blind and plays guitar like he does. I think this tune was originally by the Delmore Brothers in the '30's..

Singing on the train. Ensemble White Gold - a religious song to which I don't know the title.

Something a little lighter - Dunina's problems (silly girl making absurd excuses not to do chores)
