Never had that problem with my old home phone.
The loops on the old rotary dial phone cord were big enough to prevent catching.
The later, smaller plasticized versions we had on our phones at work were horrible rat's nests...

There were rotary phone cord connections available, but preppy daughters could still tangle one worse than a back lashed fishing reel.

i have often wished i had my rotary dial back - the cord had a finite length and was attached to the wall , i could actually be out of reach
