just found this one online, it's in the first serial number range from mukden, and i was missing one from that range. It also has a matching bolt and very clear stock cartouches. with early and late koishikawa, jinsen and jinsen "for education", and the 3 serial ranges from mukden, I guess i'm down to a few series from kokura and nagoya to complete an arsenal/series collection in the t38's.
funny thing is, I thought the kokura and nagoya rifles would first ones to show up, not the last! Here's a link to the auction, it has too many pic's to transfer over here quickly.

y'all have a good day, Keith

Yeah, if it wasn't for Kweeksdraw. That rifle would be on it's way here now. The auction was nearly over & he hit it again & again (15 minute rule). Then you came in with more than I had to spend this weekend.
Congratulations! It looks like a nice one - wouldn't have bid on it otherwise. :P

Keith, have you looked in Franks Book The T38 Rifles. On page 289 it list this rifle as a Manchukuo No Series Hoten (Mukden) Tyoe 38 Rifle. Its in the serial number range of 76 to 7178 and there were only 7500 made in this range. Interesting. This rifle is same as mine. riceone.

I don't have the t38 book... yet. I know i'm still missing a very early hoten with the arsenal logo in place of the mum, but don't expect to see one any time soon. Held one in my hands at the gunshow in birmingham where we met a couple years ago, but von mazur happened to be walking the show with me. I was fixing to ask the price when he started telling the guy just how rare a rifle he had. I handed him the rifle and walked on. bet that guy still has it, might see it priced at 5 grand or something one of these days.
good bit of advice, don't walk a show with von mazur. saw him later in the day just about getting in a fight with a dealer cause he just couldn't stay out of someone else's deal.

other than that, he's a fine fella. :lol

yall have a good day, Keith

A question about the Mums.
Some years back I read of Mums being restored using the original dies.
Would this be considered kosher?

Also there are gunsmiths that lazer cut worn away markings when restoring antique Colts. They follow the remaining markings to deepen the lettering enough that it shows well after refinishing.
Could this be done to a Mum ground no worse than the one shown here?
If so would this lower the value?

I've seen a few otherwise perfect examples with most of the Mum still showing.
