Just picked up a GEW88 rifle from a gunshop in Nevada. Owner insisted it was a "Carcano". The rifle is in excellent shape, metal, bore, and wood. Only thing--the receiver ring has been buffed and a date of 1915 overstamped. It appears to have the 88/05 mods. Anyone know anything about a 1915 dated GEW88? |

In a way the fellow was almost right. It isn't a mauser but a Mannlicher (like a carcano) I would suspect the 1915 date is the date of conversion to 88/05/15 upgrade. It is set for stripper loading instead of the packet clip system & has had the throat reamed, alond with the receiver notch put in for the longer "S Patronen" spitzer cartridge. (see the "s" stamp above the date) Looks like a nice commission rifle. Get it out of the stock, remove the barrel jacket & look for the serial No. & proofs on the barrel. See if it is original German or a czech replacement. |

Unscrews lefty-loosey. Maybe give it a shot of PB blaster or G96 if you have it first. If not a heat gun might help loosen it. |

Don't get too mean with it if it's tight - they deform easily. SW |
