I forgot I posted that pic. On another thread, I mentioned the old, moldy Vietnamese coins I sent home & Mom put away for 30 + years. They didn't come from THIS cemetery, but one not far down Rt 9.
In this pic, you can see the substantial wall around the grave. It was over 2 feet thick & there was an opening at the end for the spirit of the deceased to use as a door... But the wall was to keep evil spirits out... I never did get why the evil spirits just didn't float through the front door.
Standing in the 'door' you faced an altar across the grave for leaving incense, food & the paper stuff you bought at the ville. The paper stuff was burned & in theory, the smoke solidified in the afterlife to become the desired object for the dear departed to use.
Apparantly, there wasn't sufficient trust to leave money on the altar - it was buried. A couple graves in the other cemetery took hits from rockets or whatever Uncle Ho's Boyz were shooting that day & the contents were strewn about. It was strange to see the coins laying around but they were picked up anyway.
I guess they had already been spent in the afterlife as I have had no bad ju-ju to speak of in the years since... maybe you have to be a Buddhist for bad stuff to happen.... I dunno.
