DDR Trabant. No gas gauge - mix oil with gas - lift hood to add fuel into tank - use dipstick to measure when getting empty. Body panels made of resin and cotton waste from East Euro textile plants. One of my Euro pals said if really wet, the fenders can be torn like paper... But if you lived in East Germany it was pretty much one of these or a bicycle. SW |

An immigrant from East Germany? at the University of Kentucky told me they actually called the Trabi the "Butt" because of the two-stroke smoke like a cigar or cigarette. |

I am not sure an original Trabi would be street legal here in the states because of the 2-stroke emissions unless grandfathered in. Later models 1989-1991 used a VW engine of some kind. The original price new was 8500 marks in 1985. A used one would probably go for $3500 on up soaking wet (insert joke) according to some. Steve said the fenders could be torn like paper when wet, but some say the hard plastic Duroplast composite is supposed to be durable. They do have a cult following and can go for up to $15,000 for rally cars ?? go figure. |
