The pulp magazine was the grand child of the penny dreadfuls & the dime novels and were an inexpensive fiction book/magazine with a very wide topic range from westerns, fantasy, si-fi, romance, fiction, and even soft porn(to all intents and purposes despite their titles) printed from sometime in the late 1890's and ran through the 1950's or early 1960's. You may have heard of some of the Heros of these stories, the Black Mask, Buck Rodgers, the Shadow, the Phantom Detective, Doc Savage, the Flying Aces, Conan the Barbarian, and a lot more besides. The covers were very colorful and heavy on the kinda clothed babes while the paper inside was so low quality the pages were really easy to tear when turning.
The Shadow was one of my personal favorites, a real man, fought evil, had a really hot girl friend, got his information from a newspaper editor (maybe owner, don't remember exactly) and was a very rich man(hmm, maybe where Batman came from) and because of the numerous different authors he killed off the same bad guys several times. In fact from one author he carried 7 1911's in his cape at all times and threw them away as he fired them empty to save time rather then to waste it in reloading the automatic revolver.(not my words, his) Misspent a good part of my youth reading those thing thanks to influence of my uncle Bob, author, pulp historian, lover of german pistols, and NASA rocket scientist.
